LINDEN – From June 1-7 each year is National Family Recreation Week, according to Al MacDonald, director of Linden Public Property and Community Services Department.

“The purpose of the week is to promote increased awareness of the values of recreation and play in building strong families,” he said.

The first Saturday in June has been designated as National Family Recreation Day, a day set aside to spend recreating with your family. The American Association of Physical Activity and Recreation encourages everyone to take advantage of the opportunities National Family Recreation Week and Day offer. Spend time with your families, relax, be active, be healthy and enjoy the many benefits of recreation.

Though the traditional definition and structural form of a family may have changed over the years, the need for having what a sense of family offers to an individual has not. There still remains the need for stability within a family setting and the importance of family in fulfilling human needs. An individual grows and benefits from the interaction and develops an early sense of belonging within his/her family unit.

According to MacDonald, “Many character traits and interpersonal skills are developed within the family unit and are practiced and reinforced through recreational activities. Recreating together as a family fosters personal interactions teaching life skills such as problem solving, cooperation, compromise, coping skills, perseverance and positive attitude. Doing recreational and leisure activities as a family cultivates positive character development by encouraging responsibility, respect, honesty, loyalty, integrity, creativity and flexibility at the same time as having fun. In addition, an individual’s lifelong leisure habits build on early experiences and lifestyle. Many adults continue to participate in recreational activities they were introduced to when a child or try a new sport or hobby after being inspired by a family member to try it. Traditions are created and passed on through processes like this.”

The Linden Public Property and Community Services Department encourages all residents to recreate together as a family during National Family Recreation Week, in activities that promote physical, emotional, mental and social development. Get your family together, have some fun and make memories that will last a lifetime.
