Pierce Runs As Democrat For Working Families

My name is Jean Pierce and I’m a candidate for At-Large Council in Woodbridge Township. I’m running on Line B as a Democrat for Working Families.

I want to tell you a little about myself and why I believe that I am the strongest candidate to represent the residents of Woodbridge. I have lived in Woodbridge for over 20 years and have been a community and labor advocate most of my life.

I learned to be a voice for my community from my parents. Both were union members who worked hard and instilled in me a strong sense of responsibility to advocate for both my family and community. That lesson inspired me to lead the community effort to keep Sewaren’s library running in the midst of budget cuts, as well as fight for disclosure laws that inform us of environmental hazards in our neighborhoods.

I have also been a voice for working families. Since 2005, I have worked as a public policy staffer at the Health Professionals Allied Employees union, organizing and fighting for nurses and other health care professionals. I became involved in public health issues when my son Jonathan was diagnosed with cancer as a baby. This experience, although one of the hardest in my life, led me to advocate passionately for access to quality health care for New Jerseyans and organize the Patients First Coalition, a statewide patient advocacy group. It also energized me to become a leader in the campaign for family leave insurance, which became law in 2008.

I am a voice for progressives. I support progressive revenue solutions like asking the wealthy and large corporations to pay their fair share because we need a balanced approach to weather this economic crisis. I have supported our public workers on core issues like privatization and collective bargaining rights.

I love Woodbridge- its diverse neighborhoods, excellent schools, cultural arts institutions and most of all, its people. But we have great challenges as well. I hope to gain your support on June 7th, Primary Election Day so that, together, we can work to meet these challenges and build upon all that our community has to offer.
