Forum Asks: Was American Founded As A Christian Nation?

SCOTCH PLAINS — On Sunday, May 22, Willow Grove Presbyterian Church in Scotch Plains will present John Fea, a historian from Messiah College at its adult forum at 11:30 a.m. speaking on his book, “Was America Founded as a Christian Nation?”

As a historian, Fea moves past the emotional rhetoric of those many speaking today who claim American was founded as a totally secular state or a Christian nation. Rather, Fea invites his readers to examine the primary sources for evidence from our past.

John Murrin, who taught colonial and revolutionary American history for 30 years at Princeton University, states that “Fea challenges his readers to think like historians, and presents them with the facts they need to weigh the evidence…[including] case studies of the religious beliefs and practices of seven founding fathers—three undoubtedly devout and orthodox in their faith, while the other four are questionable in regard to one and/or the other.”

Community members are invited to join this thought-provoking discussion.

Willow Grove Presbyterian Church is located at 1961 Raritan Road in Scotch Plains. For further information about the church’s programs and ministries, visit or call 1-908-232-5678.
