SCOTCH PLAINS – Vincent LaRocca, a Union Catholic senior, has been named a recipient of a NASSP/Herff Jones Principal’s Leadership Award Scholarship (PLA), co-sponsored by the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) and Herff Jones, Inc. One hundred national state PLA winners were chosen from among more than 3,000 applications. Each state winner will receive a $1,000 college scholarship.
Vincent LaRocca of Winfield Park will be attending the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD. While at Union Catholic, LaRocca has served as President of the Student Council, is a member of the National Honor Society and National Italian Honor Society, and has been the recipient of numerous academic awards in Math, English and Science. Outside of high school he is a founding member of the Winfield Youth Volunteer Organization and junior member of the Watchung Power Boat Squadron. He is also the founder and operator of two businesses: VJ the DJ Entertainment and Yardie-Man Landscaping. This past summer he successfully completed the Naval Academy Summer Seminar and the American Legion Boys State Program.
“The qualities recognized by the PLA scholarship and demonstrated by LaRocca have never been more important than now. Academic excellence represents an aspiration for all students, leadership exemplifies an essential skill to possess in the 21 century, and service to others symbolizes the spirit of America. Students like LaRocca stand out to bravely face the challenges of today and lead us to a better tomorrow,” said Gerald Tirozzi, executive director, NASSP.
