Projects By South Amboy Artists Could Win Grants

SOUTH AMBOY – Two projects submitted by resident artists at The Studio™ at Mecca Entertainment have made there way through to the voting round of the 2011 Pepsi Refresh Project.

The first project requested a $25,000 award to create a statewide initiative and outreach program to engage, empower and help advance young and emerging artists (PreK-College) in the performing, visual and literary arts throughout New Jersey. The second project requested $5,000 in order to create a series of works that celebrate cultural diversity and help educate through the art of theatre. Both projects have the potential to create far-reaching change and will add to the cultural and creative vitality of the state and tri-state area.

According to Artistic Director Wilfredo Hernandez, “The Studio functions as a creative space for all artists. We are a company of young professionals dedicated to building a solid foundation for future generations of creatives. If we receive these grants, we intend on truly ‘refreshing’ the artistic landscape and climate for our region’s young and emerging artists by giving them increased exposure to a variety of art forms; easy access to much needed resources and information; and increased opportunities for training, creating and networking in their respective artistic forms. However, we can only achieve this with the support and daily votes of the greater community.”

The Pepsi Refresh Project requires the public to vote for projects. Both projects must receive daily votes in record numbers in order to advance to the top 15 spots in their respective categories by May 31, 2011. Those wishing to vote for the projects must sign up for a free account and can vote for each project once daily. “POWER VOTING” can be used by using the codes found on specially marked Pepsi products. Visit and to vote.

In an effort to raise awareness about the group’s projects, The STUDIO will be hosting a “Pepsi Refresh Party” in the lobby at the South Amboy YMCA on Thursday, May 19, from 6-8 p.m. Information will be distributed and voting teams will be registered. Free snacks and Pepsi samples will be available for patrons.
