South Amboy To Host Historic Railroad Fundraiser

SOUTH AMBOY – From 1888 to 1980, the Raritan River Railroad ran from South Amboy to New Brunswick. In its heyday, the line saw both passenger and freight train service. Now, only one railroad station remains in Milltown.

The Hoffman Senior Center, located at 108 South Stevens Avenue in South Amboy, will host a fundraiser to preserve the historic station on Saturday, April 30 from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Sunday, May 1 from noon – 4 p.m.. Attendees will be able to view vintage South Amboy photos and join the new South Amboy Historical Society. There will be operating model trains on display, as well as refreshments and door prizes.

The suggested donation is $5 per person or $12 per family of three. Children under 10 receive free admission.

The event is sponsored by the City of South Amboy, the Dowdell Library of South Amboy, the Milltown Historical Society and the Raritan River Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society.
