LINDEN – An alert city man helped police apprehend a suspect in an Easter Sunday liquor store robbery, authorities said.
Around 6:40 p.m. on April 24, police responded to a report of a robbery in progress at a liquor store on the 1400 block of East St. Georges Avenue. Authorities said that a 55-year-old man entered the store and saw the clerk being held at gunpoint, then went outside and called police on his cell phone.
When he arrived at the scene, Officer Jacyn McPhail saw a suspect, later identified as Ramel Fuller, 18, of Roselle, tucking something in his waistband. When the suspect noticed the officer, he began to run. McPhail drew his weapon and ordered the suspect to stop. The suspect threw a handgun into the street, which McPhail stopped to recover, police said.
Officer Martin Jedrzejewski continued the foot chase, and Fuller was apprehended on the 1100 block of Harrison Avenue without further incident. Police said that Fuller was charged with robbery, unlawful possession of a weapon, and possession of an imitation firearm (a pellet gun). He was taken to Union County Jail in Elizabeth and bail was set at $250,000.
