SCOTCH PLAINS — Willow Grove Presbyterian Church of Scotch Plains invites the community to Holy Week services. The services reflect the last week of Christ’s life, his last supper with the disciples, his death and crucifixion, and then the joyful celebration of his resurrection from the dead on Easter morning. Children and youth are encouraged to participate in the services.
Palm Sunday: Sunday, April 17, 10 a.m. This service focuses on Jesus’ triumphant arrival in Jerusalem among cheering crowds. The Rev. Cynthia Cochran-Carney will preach a sermon “He Was Going on a Journey” featuring a readers’ theater piece. Service will include children’s procession of palms and special music.
Maundy Thursday Tenebrae Service: Thursday, April 21, 7:30 p.m. This powerful service will include scripture readings about the last days of Jesus’ life and his death on the cross. The choir will present special music, including “In Remembrance.” Willow Grove welcomes back guest musician Larry Garges playing the flute. The Lord’s Supper will be celebrated and all are invited to participate. The service culminates in a dramatic scene as the congregation is invited to come forward to nail their own prayers to a large wooden cross. As the solemn service progresses, lighted candles will gradually be extinguished, and finally the congregation will exit in silence and in darkness. A special offering will be taken during the service for the Deacons’ Fund, a ministry that enables the church to help people in need throughout the year.
Easter Sunday: Sunday morning, April 24 at 10 am. A glorious celebration of Christ’s resurrection, this service will include jubilant music and joyful worship. Willow Grove will be welcoming a guest trumpet player Kim Wojcik, a member of the Imperial Brass. The choir will be singing a special anthem “Risen Alleluia.” All children are invited to take part in a special Easter Egg Hunt and will receive an Easter Joy bag. A special offering for One Great Hour of Sharing will be taken which provides funding for disaster response and refugee assistance and resettlement. The Rev.
