TRENTON – The New Jersey Department of Transportation announced the overnight closure of the access road that runs underneath Route 22 connecting Long Avenue to the ShopRite shopping plaza in Hillside.
On Thursday night, April 14, the local access road located west of Liberty Avenue will be closed to traffic at 11:30 p.m. in connection with an on-going construction project. The access road will be reopened by 7 a.m. Friday, April 15.
During the closure motorists seeking access to the shopping plaza will be directed to continue on Long Avenue to Bloy Street south to Mundet Place which provides access to the ShopRite parking lot. Traffic leaving the ShopRite parking lot will exit via Mundet Place.
The closure will accommodate work associated with a $21.5 million project that is replacing the existing, structurally deficient Route 22 viaduct which spans Liberty Avenue, Conrail train tracks and the access road in Hillside.
NJDOT is replacing the viaduct with two new separate structures: a single span bridge over the ShopRite access road and a multiple span bridge over Liberty Avenue and Conrail. The new viaduct is being built on a new alignment, 23-feet to the south of the existing structure. Shifting the roadway alignment to the south allows NJDOT to maintain traffic on Route 22 during construction and helps reduce time to complete the project.
Construction began in June 2010 and completion is scheduled for November 2012. NJDOT provides emergency roadway information, construction schedule updates and real time traffic information and images at www.511nj.org
