EDISON — Matthew Faust of Westfield, a Kindergarten student at The Wardlaw-Hartridge School, gets ready to use the glue as fifth-grader Victor Vollbrechthausen of Westfield continues his project. Throughout this school year the fifth graders and Kindergartners have worked together once each month or so on various hands on and collaborative activities.
The purpose of these gatherings is to encourage leadership traits in the fifth graders, to allow the fifth graders to teach the kindergartners some of the concepts they have learned (such as patterning), and to foster an opportunity for community bonding. Some activities that the Lower School students have done together include making bats for the kindergarten unit on mammals, practicing and performing Christmas carols for the community, and learning about patterns. Students in both classes look forward to getting together each month. This month’s activities entail creating Easter baskets together and participating in an Easter egg hunt later in April.
