ELMWOOD PARK–Spencer Savings Bank, a mutually-owned community savings bank headquartered in Elmwood Park, raised a total of $8,500 to benefit children suffering from Muscular Dystrophy through its participation in the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA)’s 28th annual St. Patrick’s Day fundraising campaign, “Shamrocks Against Dystrophy.”

From Feb. 7 to March 18, Spencer Savings Bank employees and customers supported the fight against neuromuscular diseases and helped children and adults in Northern New Jersey by buying and signing $1, $5 and $10 Shamrock mobiles, decorating the bank’s branches in green and gold displays of community concern and compassion.

“There is a huge need for support, resources, and encouragement for these children,” said José B. Guerrero, chairman, president and CEO of Spencer Savings Bank.  “Spencer Savings participated in this program with the hope of making a difference in their lives while raising awareness and support from our local communities.”

With every $800 raised, MDA is able to send one child to MDA Summer Camp, a camp offering a wide range of activities specially designed for young people with limited mobility.  Spencer’s original goal was to raise enough money to send five children to camp, a total cost of $4,000.  This year, the bank’s local businesses and customers pulled together in a true sense of community, raising more than twice the goal amount, earning enough money to send ten children to camp.

“We are incredibly pleased that through the support of our communities, we far exceeded our goal and could help twice as many children.  We are grateful to be able to send these deserving children to a camp where they can forget about their disabilities and enjoy their childhoods,” added Guerrero.

Thanks to the efforts of volunteers, and participating businesses and sponsors nationwide, the “Shamrocks Against Dystrophy” campaign raised over $20 million in 2010.  The money raised from the sales of Shamrocks supports MDA services, including the MDA-sponsored clinic at UMDNJ in Newark, summer camp in Spring Valley, NY for children and young adults with neuromuscular diseases, and lifesaving research.

“Through its participation in this program, Spencer Savings Bank confirmed its commitment to helping children and young adults in the community living with muscle disease,” said Vanessa Malfitano, Fundraising Coordinator of MDA of Northern New Jersey.  “Shamrocks Against Dystrophy’ supports MDA’s research and services aimed to offer help and hope to families in our communities.”
