LINDEN – According to a recent study, most Americans say they believe in God and many say they regularly attend worship services, yet on any given Sunday just 20 percent actually show up in church.
Morning Star Community Christian Center in Linden aims to change that. The church’s latest effort to build its community started within its 800+ member congregation. The “Come Grow with Morning Star” campaign is a movement that seeks to reach people who are not connected to a church family and invite them to one of the special services or programs the church sponsors.
Last month, during the campaign’s kick-off event, hundreds of Morning Star members could be seen wearing t-shirts with the slogan “Come Grow With Morning Star.”
“Our ‘Come Grow with Morning Star’ kick-off turned out to be one of our most-attended worship services of the year,” said Senior Pastor Therman Evans. “God moved on the hearts of our members to really catch the simple and age-old concept, of the Great Commission and commit time reaching out to, praying for, and inviting others.”
The church’s efforts extend beyond traditional worship services. Morning Star serves more than 15,000 families per year with a community food bank, job counseling, housing seminars, SAT reviews for high school students and other programs open to the public.
“Our church is passionate about feeding the spiritual, social and emotional needs of the community by putting the Word into action… we are believing God as we seek to foster and build a strong community,” Evans said.
