PERTH AMBOY — After 21 years of working in the retail industry for someone else, Pavel Tartakosky of New York City decided it was time to open his own business.
Tartakosky had to make many tough decisions when deciding to open his business, TODO Stores, a general merchandise store, but locating to Perth Amboy, was not one of them, he said.
“Perth Amboy is a beautiful city, the rent is reasonable and the advantages of the being in the UEZ [Urban Enterprise Zone] and the BID [Business Improvement District] are a tremendous benefit,” said Tartakosky.
The 7,200-square-foot store is located at 104 Smith Street (the former location of Karl’s Appliance store) and celebrated its grand opening recently. The store sells everything from clothing for the entire family to housewares and dry foods, (hence “TODO,” which means “everything” in Spanish)
“Perth Amboy is a great city in which to do business,” said Perth Amboy Mayor Wilda Diaz.
Because TODO is located in Perth Amboy’s UEZ, it can charge customers 3.5 percent sales tax (half of the state sales tax). The UEZ and BID programs also offer several benefits for businesses, including tax credits.
Currently, TODO Stores has four employees, but plans to hire more when needed.
“I feel as though the city really cares about the success for my business,” Tartakosky said. “In all my years in the retail industry, I’ve helped open many stores, and never once has the mayor come to a grand opening. But, here in Perth Amboy, Mayor Diaz did. It’s a testament to how much the city cares.”
TODO Stores is opened from Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and on Sunday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
