EDISON — The Middlesex County College Dance Ensemble will present its 10th Anniversary Spring Dance Concert, “Celebration” on Friday and Saturday, April 15 and 16. The concerts will be held in the Performing Arts Center on the college’s Edison Campus at 7 p.m. and are free.
“The MCC Ensemble is celebrating 10 wonderful years of dance,” said Aimee Mitacchione, the artistic director and choreographer. “Traditionally our performances are modern dance-based. This year, we are marking the anniversary by presenting culturally diverse movement genres and dances that have a celebratory theme.”
Mitacchione said the ensemble has grown dramatically over the years. The first performance had only seven dancers presenting three works; this year, 50 dancers auditioned and they’ll be performing 14 dance pieces.
“Our organization provides the opportunity to feel a sense of belonging on a commuter campus,” she said. “Our dancers have formed tight-knit relationships over the years, created many special bonds, and made unforgettable memories. Many alumni return to choreograph and perform year after year. We are also honored this year to have a professional choreographer, Lees Hummel, the education director for the new Lustig Dance Theatre.”
Student choreographers include Malcolm Fields, Jillian Madorma, Megan Ehnat, Tabitha Edwards, German Mayorga, Melanie Belonis and Anjelica Roman. Alumni choreographers include Lindsey Jordon, Raven Dunbar, Alicia Pagan and Kelly Farley.
“Our dancers range from advanced professionals in the dance field to absolute beginners,” Mitacchione said. “The Dance Program prides itself on providing opportunities to a diverse group of people who may not have otherwise been given the chance to gain experience in auditions, rehearsals and performances. We all work together to provide a professional concert that will be enjoyable and extremely enriching.”
