Linden Offers Activities For Seniors

LINDEN – The city’s Department of Public Property & Community Services offers a number of activities for Linden seniors. Any resident age 50 and over can join in the following activities at the John T. Gregorio Center, 330 Helen Street (unless otherwise noted):

Nutrition Program
The Gregorio Center nutrition site serves lunches Monday through Friday at noon to senior citizens 60 and older. Reservations must be made 24 hours in advance by calling 1-908-474-8629. A $1.75 donation is suggested.


Health Screening
Blood pressure checks are offered free on April 8, May 13, June 10, Aug. 12, Sept. 9, Oct. 14 and Dec. 9.

Craft Classes
Craft classes are held weekly from September through June at the Gregorio Center on Monday and Thursday mornings 10 a.m. – noon and the 8th Ward Recreation Center every fourth Tuesday at 12:30 p.m.

A fully equipped woodshop is available to Linden senior citizens on Monday and Tuesday mornings from 9 a.m. – noon. Woodcarving is taught on Wednesday mornings from 9 a.m. – noon.

Social Line Dancing
Free dance lessons are conducted on Fridays from 10 – 11 a.m. September through June.

Bowling League
The Senior Citizen League takes place September through May at 9:30 a.m. at Linden Lanes. Call 1-908-862-8627 for more information.

Exercise Rooms
The exercise room at the center is open to Linden adults Monday.- Friday 7:30 a.m. – 4:15 p.m. Call 1-908-862-8627 for more information. The exercise rooms at the Linden Multi-Purpose Center, 1025 John Street, are also available. Call 1-908-862-8639 for more information.

Bus Transportation
A senior citizens’ bus is operating on a published schedule five days a week to take seniors shopping. Any Linden resident 50 years of age or older may register for an identification card for the senior bus. ID Cards are issued Monday-Friday between 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Bring proof of residency to the Gregorio Center. Call 1-908-862-8627 for more information.

Social Clubs

  • The Retired Men’s Club meets Tuesdays at 1 p.m. Tues/Wed. club meets the second Wednesday each month at 1 p.m.
  • The Senior Friendship Club meets Thursdays at 1 p.m.
  • Ceramic Club meets the second Thursday every other month at 7 p.m.
  • 7th Ward Recreation Center on Tremley Point Road meets Mondays at 1 p.m.
  • Sunnyside Recreation Center on Melrose Terrace meets Thursdays at 7:30 p.m. for art.
  • Wilson Park Recreation Center on Summit Terrace has a Fun & Friendship Club on the second Tuesday of the month at 1 p.m.

Knitting/Crocheting for a Cause
A session is held each Tuesday morning from 10 a.m. – noon. Open to all. Lap blankets, baby hats, shawls and hats for the troops are created and donated to various causes. All you need is the basic knowledge of knitting or crocheting.
