ELIZABETH – This spring, the Union County College Retails Skills Center is offering free job training classes for Elizabeth residents interested in the hospitality industry, customer service and sales, and visual merchandising.
The hospitality industry course will be held from May 23 until June 14, from Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. daily. This certificate course will train participant to work in areas such as: front desk, reservations, hospitality events, event planner, tourism services, restaurant positions, gaming, amusement parks, bell person, and more. Information sessions will be offered at the Retail Skills Center at 11 a.m. on May 4 and May 11.
The customer service and sales course will be held from April 25 until June 15, from Monday through Thursday, for three hours per evening, starting at 5:30 p.m. The 90-hour certificate course will prepare students for a career in retail. The course will cover areas such as: the world of retail and retail store staffing, store lay-out and design, critical work functions, resume-writing and interviewing skills, and job leads. Information sessions will be offered at the Retails Skills Center at 6 p.m. on April 6 and April 13.
The visual merchandising course will be held from April 25 until May 13, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. daily. This training program is for people who are art majors, the creative type, or into decorating. In this class students will: review merchandising and the consumer, how the industry markets to consumers, understand fashion “seasons” and how signage plays a role in a display. It will also cover category size and market segments, understanding how lighting is a key element in merchandising, the role of fixtures, and the tools of the trade and how to apply them to the industry. Information sessions will be held at 11 a.m. at the Retail Skills Center on April 6 and April 13.
