SCOTCH PLAINS — If you are interested in the meaning of life and would like the opportunity to ask questions about Christianity, Willow Grove Church in Scotch Plains invites you to join the discussion. Many people are asking questions about Jesus. Was he a man, or is he the Son of God? If he is both, what are the implications for our everyday lives?
In an attempt to explore these and related questions, Willow Grove Church is offering a six-week discussion series based on the Alpha course. You are invited to choose from four possible groups which will discuss the same weekly topic:
1. Sunday mornings at 11:30 a.m. from March 13 to April 17
2. Wednesday nights at 7:30 p.m. from March 16 to April 20
3. Thursday mornings at 10 a.m. from March 17 to April 21
4. Thursdays for young moms at 3:30 p.m. from March 17 to April 21
All discussions will meet in a room on the second floor at Willow Grove Presbyterian Church. Childcare can be provided if requested in advance. Each session will last about one hour, including time for everyone to discuss questions or issues they have.
The first session is about the meaning of life. It begins with the question: “Is Christianity boring, untrue, and irrelevant?” Some people think Christianity is exciting, true, and relevant. The case for Christianity as the basis for the meaning of life will be presented and an exchange of views will be encouraged.
The second discussion explores: “Who is Jesus?” A great deal of historical evidence will be presented supporting Jesus’ existence and the contention that he is the unique Son of God. Those who are willing to consider the body of evidence that Jesus is both God and a man will be able to draw their own conclusions about who Jesus is.
The third week’s meeting will discuss: “Why did Jesus die?” Many people suffered an agonizing death by hanging from a cross in Roman times. What was different about Jesus’ death? What did His death achieve? What does it mean that He died for our sins? You will have the opportunity to find out how Jesus’ death can have wonderful implications for your life.
The last three weekly topics will be: “How Can We Have Faith?”; “Why and How Do I Pray?”; and “Why and How Should I Read the Bible?”.
Willow Grove Presbyterian Church is located at 1961 Raritan Road in Scotch Plains, opposite the Scotch Plains Southside Firehouse and near the corner of South Martine Avenue. All church facilities are handicap-accessible. For more information about the church, visit www.willowgrovechurch.org
