Charity Softball Tournament Returns In April

ROSELLE/ELIZABETH – On Saturday, April 16, the Elizabeth NJ Firemen’s Federal Credit Union will sponsor the Play Ball for Miracles Charity Softball Tournament to raise money for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals and the families of firefighters who have children with special needs.

This three-division softball tournament is open to men’s, women’s and co-ed softball teams.  It is co-sponsored by ASA and therefore, ASA rules apply.  All teams are guaranteed to play at least three games in this one-pitch, slow-pitch tournament.  (One pitch means every batter starts with a full count). Co-ed teams are required to have three members of the opposite gender on the field at all times.

The top two teams in each division then go on to play in the championship games.  Both the champions and runners-up receive team trophies. The deadlines for team registration is April 1.  A $250 tax-deductible, non-refundable registration fee is required for each team.

Play Ball for Miracles was created in 2005 after an Elizabeth firefighter’s son was diagnosed with a bleeding disorder so rare that it still has no name.  The tournament was created as a way to raise awareness of his disease and raise money for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.

All proceeds from the day’s events are donated directly to Children’s Miracle Network for use in hospitals that specialize in caring for kids with illnesses, birth defects, injuries, etc.  The money from this event goes to Children’s Specialized Hospital and Bristol-Myers Squibb at Robert Wood Johnson Hospital.

Play Ball for Miracles has celebrated success for 7 years, growing from a 6 team tournament in 2005, to over 40 teams in 2010.  The tournament has raised over $50,000 and organizers have set a $20,000 goal for 2011 alone.

In addition to teams, organizers are accepting donations for prize raffles, and community and business sponsors through the Buy-a-Ball Campaign.  Personal donations of any amount are also accepted and appreciated. The tournament also needs volunteers.
