Soaring Gas Prices Prompt Senator To Call For Oil Reserve Release

U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez

WASHINGTON, D.C. – New Jersey Sen. Robert Menendez has called for the release of oil from the federal government’s Strategic Petroleum Reserve to help lower rapidly-rising gas prices.

According to AAA’s Daily Fuel Gauge Report, the average price of a gallon of regular gasoline in New Jersey is $3.298 today, up nearly 20 cents since last month and 73 cents since last year. The average price of a gallon of diesel fuel is $3.755, up more than 35 cents since last month and 95 cents since last year.

“Gas prices are up – causing the price of everything from food to medicine to jump as well and threatening our economic recovery. Middle class families simply can’t afford the rising prices,” Menenedez said. “President Obama should release oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve now to stabilize gas prices and should use the profits raised to cut the deficit and to invest in the electric vehicle technology that is essential to ending our addition to foreign oil.”
