RAHWAY – To wrap up their Motion and Design science unit, fifth grade students in Deborah Prakapas’s class at Roosevelt School in Rahway participated in a Lunch Box Derby. The students used their critical thinking skills to design and build vehicles out of five fruits and vegetables; then they raced their creations against each other.

The teams and their vehicles before the big race.

Kareem Taylor, Dominick Williams, and Xyaire Merriweather discuss their design.

Antionette Bryant and Wil’Lisha Jackson think their vehicle is ready to win the race.

Adrian Najar, Noadia Charles, and Tia-Leigh Dorman believe the aerodynamic design of their vehicle will bring them the winning title.

Hector Morales and Dana Wilkins hope they capture the win with their carrot-body design.

Natalie Quelopana and Ahmed Elsisi are confident their orange wheels will roll right across the finish line for the win.
