CLARK — First grade teacher Paula Spence was recently honored as Valley Road School’s teacher of the year.

Spence, described as a natural very early in her teaching career, is a hands-on teacher whose love of her profession and her students is evident on a daily basis. She is a creative teacher who plans her lessons with the varied needs of all her students in mind. In addition to teaching, Spence also serves as a teacher representative for the PTA, is an active member of the New Jersey Kindergarten Association, plans career days and workshop presentations and is active in community-related volunteer work such as reservoir clean-up and animal rescue.

Spence received her award from Mrs. Danielle M. Kovach, a special education teacher in the Hopatcong School District in Sussex County, who was recently named the 2010-11 New Jersey Teacher of the Year. Kovach is the niece of Valley Road School special education instructor Jacky Hanson, who received the VRS 2009-10 Teacher of the Year Award.
