Colonia High School Announces “42nd Street” Production

COLONIA – Colonia High School will present the musical “42nd Street” from March 31 through April 3, with a free senior citizens matinee performance on March 29.

“42nd Street” was adapted for the stage in 1980 from a 1933 movie musical. The Broadway production featured a book by Michael Stewart and Mark Bramble, lyrics by Al Dubin, and music by Harry Warren.

The show chronicles director Julian Marsh’s (Frank Catena) attempt to launch a new show called “Pretty Lady” during the midst of the Great Depression. When leading lady Dorothy Brock (Kara O’Halloran) breaks her ankle on opening night, chorus singer Peggy Sawyer (Angelica Cuzzola) is thrust into the leading role with only 36 hours to learn 25 pages, six songs, and ten dance numbers. The fate of “Pretty Lady” rests in her hands and Marsh says that by the end of the next evening he’ll “either have a live leading lady or a dead chorus girl!”

The Colonia High School production also features Christopher Murphy as Billy Lawlor, Melanie Cella as Maggie Jones, Joseph Ciampi as Bert Berry and Rebecca Fenderson as “Anytime” Annie. The role of Phyllis is played by Alison Pajonk; Anastasiya Kaspruk is Lorraine, Caitlyn Altieri is Andi Lee, Niko Palivoda is Pat Denning, Mike Schiavo is Abner Dillon and Richard Dare is Mac.

The ensemble includes Caitlin Diaz, Carly Fazio, Deysia Cooper, Alyssa Fernandez, Ashley Fitzsimmons, Daniella Forrero, Kayla Fowler, April Liwanag, Jannette Nweme, Marisa Rosen, Kristie Balogh, Tori Bertsch, Catalina Chesney, Brian Delgado, Tess Hopper, Jordan Valle and Neil Garrett.

“42nd Street:” is directed by Stephanie Platko, with Emily Sellmann serving as the student stage manager and assistant director and Clare Gomes as the student assistant stage manager. Kristin Cioni and Matthew Goncalves are the choreographers, while Vanessa Perea and Robert Edwards provide vocal direction.

Kevin Perdoni is the musical director, Melissa Abrams is the technical director and Casey O’Donnell is the student technical director. Brenda Alves is the front of house manager.

Stephanie Platko and Melissa Abrams designed the sets, which are constructed by William Leahy. Kate Eovino is the lighting designer, and Danielle Simkovich handles the costumes.

Alexandra Clark is the make-up advisor and Danielle Simkovich is the make-up and hair designer. Lisa Ercolino is in charge of publicity, with assistance from students Alison Pajonk and Rebecca Fenderson.

Performances will be held at 7 p.m. on March 31-April 2, with a 2 p.m. matinee on April 3. Tickets are $10 in advance and $14 at the door. Senior citizens can purchase discounted tickets for $5. For more information, email chstheatertickets@gmail.com.
