Equipment Failure Knocks Out Power For 20,000 Customers

ELIZABETH – An equipment failure at PSE&G’s Bayway Switching Station in Elizabeth knocked out power to approximately 20,000 customers yesterday afternoon.

Customers in Elizabeth, Hillside, Union, Roselle, Linden, Kenilworth, Irvington and Newark were affected, including major businesses such as Newark Liberty International Airport, Anheuser Busch, Jersey Gardens Mall, and Tuscan Dairy. CMD Media’s office in Elizabeth was without power from about 2:30 – 4 p.m. yesterday.


According to a PSE&G spokesperson, the problem occurred while the utility was upgrading the Bayway Switching Station in time for peak summer load. Once the outage occurred, the utility isolated the failure and restored the station through an alternate power feed. The cause of the equipment failure is under investigation.
