EDISON — The Graham Lustig Dance Theatre’s performance of Beauty and the Beast will take place at Middlesex County College Sunday, Feb. 20 at 3:30 p.m. The event will be at the Performing Arts Center on the Edison campus.
Set in the mysterious Pine Barrens in early 19th century, a Narrator in the persona of the original author, Madam Le Prince de Beaumont, guides the audience through this love-lost, love-regained romantic story. Danced to string sonatas composed in 1804 by the then 12-year-old Italian composer Gioachino Rosinni, this ballet also includes a traditional bone-playing finale and a happily-ever-after ending.
The Uncertain Steps were the occasionally improvised moments in Baroque dancing and three couples bring these elegant dances to life. Played live by cellist ?ölen Dikener, this ballet unfolds in patterns, both formal and decorative, inspired by the Bach’s Cello Suite No. 6.
This is the Lustig Dance Theatre’s second performance at the College. In October, 2010, the group presented the world premier of Luna Mexicana and other works to a packed house.
“We’re honored that they will again be performing at Middlesex County College,” said Nadine Heller, chairperson of the Department of Visual, Performing and Media Arts. “This is a world-class dance troupe with one of the most creative directors around. It’s going to be a wonderful event.”
