Free Tax Preparation Assistance Available In New Brunswick

NEW BRUNSWICK — A coalition of educational and nonprofit organizations will be offering free tax preparation services to the community this coming tax season. The program, called VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance), will start today and run through April 15.

“This service is aimed at low and moderate income residents,” said Evelyn Rosa, director of the Middlesex County College New Brunswick Center. “We want to spare them the expense of having a tax preparation service handle their taxes, but at the same time, we want them to be able to take advantage of all the tax credits to which they are entitled. We don’t want them to miss out on any refunds.”

Last year, VITA was able to help residents receive a total of $617,000 in refunds.

The agencies in Middlesex County that will be sponsoring VITA sites are Middlesex County College (1-732-745-8866), Elijah’s Promise Soup Kitchen (1-732-545-9002, ext. 122), United Way of Central Jersey (1-732-247-3727), Magyar Bank (1-732-342-7600, ext. 100), the Jewish Renaissance Foundation of Perth Amboy (1-732-324-2114), the Puerto Rican Action Board (1-732-828-4510, ext. 162), New Brunswick Public Library (1-732-745-5108), New Brunswick Senior Center (1-732-745-5090), and the Highland Park Senior Center (1-732-819-0052). Other agencies assisting with outreach and marketing efforts include Unity Square, the Anshe Emeth Community Development Corporation, and New Labor, a nonprofit organization that assists immigrant workers.

Days and hours vary by location. To locate the nearest VITA site, call 1-800-906-9887.
