Something For Everyone At Divine Mercy Parish

By Corinne Wnek

RAHWAY — The merging of St. Mary and St. Mark parishes in Rahway on July 1, 2010 gave birth to a new and vibrant community known as Divine Mercy Parish. This parish, under the leadership of Fr. Dennis Kaelin, has emerged as an ‘activist’ parish where many events are held to benefit diverse groups of people not only in Rahway, but all over the world.

Parishioners, for instance, have raised money to help fight cholera in Haiti. “We are so blessed in this parish to have a solid financial base and generous parishioners who continue to support us in Thanksgiving to God for all his blessings upon us,” said Kaelin. “We want to help others who are suffering and have much less than we do.” A substantial amount of money was also collected for Haiti last year to help in the country’s reconstruction after the devastating earthquake hit.

The response from Divine Mercy Parish to the people of the Philippines who endured mass destruction to their towns and villages as a result of flooding was equally impressive. “Our parishioners helped to rebuild the homes of families who were left with very little after everything they had washed away,” Kaelin states. “Through the generosity of our own people, Divine Mercy parish provided food, clothing and medicine to those in great need there.”

Divine Mercy Parish offers, not only Roman Catholic religious services, but a series of events designed to enhance the spirituality of anyone who would like to learn more about scripture and faith. For instance, the Parish Forum Program, held the third Saturday of each month from 3 to 5 p.m., is designed to foster general understanding of the Catholic position in such areas as stem cell research and pro-life issues, to name a few. The Feb. 19 program will feature the renowned speaker Fr. Bill Halbing who will help the audience to understand about the relationship of the Bible and the Eucharist.

In addition, the Knights of Columbus will sponsor two events in the month of February. On Feb. 6 there will be a Super Bowl party at the Jacques Avenue, Rahway, Knights of Columbus. There will also be a Valentine’s Day dinner dance there on Saturday, Feb. 12.
