CLARK — The Skulski Art Gallery will present a collaborative exhibition, “Unfolding Messages”, between Minako Ota and Gregory West, from Jan. 21 through Feb. 10.
The opening reception is scheduled for Friday, Jan. 21, from 7 – 9 p.m. The public is welcome, admission is free and light refreshments will be served.
The theme of this collaborative exhibition is art as a messenger of our inner spirit. Creating and appreciating artwork reveals us as we really are, unfolding layers of our subconscious.
Ota, born in Japan, began by studying Japanese painting in Tama Art University in Tokyo. She moved to England to study Western painting restoration at Cambridge University and worked as a conservator in Chicago, London and US for 15 years. Moving to Russia re-ignited her creative streak and she resumed painting there, subsequently exhibiting her paintings in Moscow, Paris and New York. Her life journey outside Japan turned Ota’s artistic vision into a hybrid of Asian and European cultures, an on-going metamorphosis of these radically diverse societal and mythological experiences. Currently she is based in Princeton.
West studied art at The School of Visual Arts in New York and later studied the technique of Flemish egg emulsion painting with Carol Jones Jr. He has lived and exhibited his sculptures and paintings in Los Angeles and Santa Barbara, Calif. until this recent return to Bucks County, Pa. His sculptures delve between the physical and the spiritual seeking the space between, the unfolding shapes ripe with an expectation of release. His paintings allow the mind to wander a landscape of inner reality. The paintings are a place of contemplation, a place to mediate on the manifestation of spirit.
