ELIZABETH – The Elizabeth Packers Pee Wee football team was one of eight winners chosen by a panel of judges in the Toyota Tiny Football League contest.
The winners were announced on Sunday during the broadcast of an NFL playoff game. Each of the eight winners receive a $5,000 donation, while the Saddleback Valley Wolverines from California receive a $10,000 prize as the TFL Fan Champion, which was determined by popular vote.
“We wanted to spotlight kids who demonstrate key Toyota values both on and off the field in a fun, unexpected way” said Tim Morrison, corporate manager of marketing communications, Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A. Inc. “We also hoped that the Tiny Football League would inspire adults to get involved with Pee Wee football, further nurturing and developing the values of teamwork, constant improvement and determination within these young athletes.”
Approximately 600 teams nationwide submitted a photo and explained how they uphold Toyota values of teamwork, constant improvement and determination.
According to Denise George Carroll, who prepared the Packers’ contest entry, the football program aims to help Elizabeth youth by coupling the sport of football with mentoring. The Packers strive to teach discipline and provide proactive role models, both on and off the field, she said.
Elizabeth Packers President Carlos Torres said that everyone is excited about the award and having the children’s photos on TV. He said that the Toyota grant is a blessing, adding that it will be helpful for paying down debts from the expenses of founding the organization in 2008.
The Elizabeth Packers program operates five flag and tackle football teams at different age levels, allowing children from 5-15 to participate. There is also a cheer program. Denise George Carroll said that the Packers have enough equipment for 25 children to play at each level. She’s hopeful that the Toyota award and other sponsorships will allow the program to expand and enable more children to participate.
