I am a college student who recently completed my summer 2010 internship with the Edison Wetlands Association (EWA). Throughout my childhood and teenage years, my parents were actively involved EWA volunteers. When the EWA purchased the Triple C Ranch in Edison, my whole family would visit to see the pigs and goats. Back then, there was a beautiful garden at the ranch that was tended by several adults. After a few years, those adults moved onto other projects and the garden was abandoned.
In 2006, I was applying to John P. Stevens High School’s Honor Society and thought that transforming the garden would be a great way to show my leadership qualities. Along with my two friends and brother, we were able to make the garden flourish again.
Today, my small garden team of three people has expanded into a large high school junior group of the Terra Nova Garden Club called “G-arden Unit.” With the help of an EWA grant, the garden club and the garden continue to expand and take on new tasks, while offering wildlife habitat and native wildflowers for butterflies and hummingbirds.
