LINDEN – Police arrested two city residents early Monday morning who are accused of burglarizing an unoccupied home in an apparent attempt to steal copper piping, authorities said.
Thomas D. Smith, 35, and Patrina A. Smith, 29, were arrested and charged with burglary. Thomas D. Smith was also charged with criminal mischief and possession of burglary tools.
Police received a report of a burglary in progress at a house on the 10 block of East Curtis Street at 3:46 a.m. on Jan. 3. Officers arrested Thomas D. Smith inside the unoccupied rental property, while Patrina A. Smith was waiting outside in a vehicle when she was detained.
Police recovered a pry bar in the building’s basement near a window that had been forced. Thomas D. Smith had a pipe cutter in his possession at the time of his arrest, police said.
Detectives are investigating whether these suspects are connected to other copper thefts in Linden, police said.
