Woodbridge Loses Longtime Civic Leader

AVENEL – Woodbridge attorney and civic leader John A. “Jack” Hila Sr., died suddenly on Monday, Dec. 27, at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, Rahway.

Hila grew up in Carteret, graduating with honors from Carteret High School before attending Fordham University and Fordham University School of Law.


Hila was a former Deputy Attorney General and Woodbridge Township Councilman. He practiced law in Woodbridge for 45 years. Hila was a trustee of the Avenel Democratic Club and the George Street Playhouse and a member of the Executive Committee of the Woodbridge Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce.

Surviving are his wife, Carol Safchinsky Hila, who is the president of the Woodbridge Chamber of Commerce, as well as daughter Melissa Tew, son John A. Hila Jr., four grandchildren, two sisters and many other relatives.

Funeral services were held Monday morning at the Costello-Koyen Funeral Home in Avenel. Interment was in St. Gertrude Cemetery, Colonia.  Memorial contributions may be made to the John A. Hila Sr. Memorial Fund, c/o Melissa H. Tew, 1119 Mulford Road, Columbus, Ohio 43212.
