BREA, Calif. – “Bella” was the most popular name for pet dogs in 2010, according to Veterinary Pet Insurance Co., while “Max” was the top name for cats.
The pet insurer determined the results by sorting its database of 485,000 insured pets. “Bailey” and “Max” were the second and third ranking names for dogs, while “Bella” and “Chloe” took those spots on the cat list.
In 2009, “Bella” was the most popular name for dogs, while “Chloe” was to top name for cats.
Only 13 dogs in the insurer’s database were named “Fido,” while nearly all of the top 10 pet names were also human names.
“We know that nearly half of pet owners today view their pets as a part of their family,” said Curtis Steinhoff, director of Corporate Communications at VPI. “Given that pets are considered family members, it makes sense that pet owners are selecting human-oriented names like ‘Max’ or ‘Charlie.’”
