Rutgers Student Killed While Crossing Route 18 (Updated)

NEW BRUNSWICK —  A 21-year old Rutgers University student was killed yesterday when she was struck by a pickup truck while crossing Route 18 at George Street in New Brunswick, Middlesex County Prosecutor Bruce J. Kaplan and New Brunswick Police Director Peter Mangarella announced.

Chelsea Traynor, 21, of  Concord, California was pronounced dead shortly after she was struck at 11:08 a.m. on Dec. 9,  by a Ford pickup truck driven by Roger Hode, 40, of South River.

An investigation by Patrolman Mark Smith of the New Brunswick Police Department and Investigator Sean O’Lone of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office determined that Traynor was killed when she was hit by the pickup truck, which was heading north on Route 18 through the George Street intersection.

An autopsy by the Middlesex County Medical Examiner’s Office showed Traynor suffered blunt force injury.

No charges have been filed, but authorities said that an investigation is continuing.
