Hotline Helps People Cope With Holiday Stress

STATE — If the idea of gift giving and holiday celebrations makes you anxious and depressed, help is only a phone call away.  CONTACT We Care, the award-winning crisis hotline has been easing people’s stress, loneliness, and depression by offering the gift of listening since 1975.  Highly trained volunteers staff the phone lines 365 days a year.  The hotline number is 1-908-232-2880.

“Stress is the number one reason why people call us,” said David Owens, executive director of CONTACT.  “With the high expectations for holiday cheer, this time of year can be especially stressful or depressing for many people.  Talking, especially to a non-judgmental, active listener, can be truly healing.”

CONTACT We Care trains its telephone volunteers to listen actively and to focus on the caller’s feelings so that the caller may find relief in knowing that his or her feelings are understood and accepted.  “Often when we talk to our family and friends about what’s stressing us, they are too busy to really listen or too quick to give advice,” said Owens.  “CONTACT’s volunteers are here to listen and reflect rather than judge.    It’s important to recognize that the year-end holidays may hold more anxiety and sadness than comfort and joy for many of us.  We at CONTACT are here to listen to that sadness.  We may not provide joy, but we certainly hope we can provide comfort.”
