“…life integrates art…”

“A newspaper that gets no complaints is a dying newspaper…”

That’s a quote from the editor of the L.A. Times, where the brilliant political cartoonist Paul Conrad worked for over thirty years…

[smartads]

As a multi-Pulitzer-Prize cartoonist, skewering everything from ‘Watergate’ to ‘Iran-Contra’ to ‘The Iraq Invasion’, Conrad has had many accolades thrust upon him during his tenure, including being on Nixon’s ‘enemy list’, receiving death threats from the Reagan administration, and being censored by the Bush Jr. administration…

And, in a new documentary about his life, (titled ‘”Drawing Fire”), he recalls them all and more, including his first influence…a nun…

While in catholic school as a lad, the nun there told him that they were always to support the president, no matter what…and even at that early age, Conrad knew that there were things that needed to be said…and so he did, with every president, starting with Eisenhower…

In one of his last interviews, (before passing away this past year), when questioning retirement, he stated that, knowledge was the key to doing it right, and, as long as there was something that needed to be said, he would say it…

I think most of us could aspire to that as well…

Idle voices are a playground unto themselves…

We need to speak up and speak out more…

…’cause there’s always something that needs to be said…
