Information Session For Alternate Route Teaching Program

EDISON — Middlesex County College will hold an information session for people interested in becoming teachers through the alternate route program. It is scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 9 at 6 p.m. in the College Center, Cafeteria C, on the Edison campus. Preregistration is requested; call 1-732-548-6000, ext. 3144 or e-mail

While anyone with qualifications may apply, the program is aimed at professionals who want to change careers and teach.

This alternate route program, “New Pathways to Teaching in New Jersey,” allows prospective teachers to begin their training in the spring or summer at community colleges all over the state. Although “New Pathways” will be the focus of the information session, the entire process for alternate route candidates will be discussed.

The graduate-level program will run in two stages. Stage I is offered in the spring and/or the summer as a 45-hour pre-service program with guided classroom observations. Stage II will run in the fall of 2011 and spring of 2012 and will include content specific courses and a capstone institute.

Students can choose to take the program as either a certification requirement to become a teacher in New Jersey, or choose to apply the program as 15 credits toward a master’s in teaching degree from New Jersey City University.

The alternate route program is for people who did not major in education while in college but would like to teach. They work toward certification while they are teaching. Many, although not all, may be career-changers.

Program candidates must hold a bachelor’s degree with either a major in an arts and sciences field for elementary education or hold a major in the appropriate field for subject area license. Candidates must have a cumulative grade point average of 2.75 or higher for the last degree earned and receive a passing score on the appropriate Praxis II exam.

For more information on the program or the information session, contact the Office of School Relations at 1-732-548-6000, ext. 3144.
