TRENTON – Assembly Speaker Sheila Oliver has chosen Assemblyman Peter J. Barnes III (D-Edison) to chair the Assembly Judiciary Committee.
Barnes, 54, succeeds state-Senator-elect Linda R. Greenstein (D-Plainsboro) who will be sworn into the Senate next month.
“It is an honor to be chosen for this post. It offers me a greater opportunity to better serve the people in my district and across New Jersey,” said Barnes, who served as vice-chair of the Judiciary Committee during the 2008-09 session.
The Assembly’s influential Judiciary Committee oversees legislation dealing with criminal justice, civil rights, court administration, juvenile justice and the judicial system.
Barnes, also the Majority Whip, has served in the Assembly since 2007 and has been a member of the Assembly’s Appropriations, Budget, and Environment and Solid Waste committees during the current legislative session.
An attorney in private practice, Barnes, represents the 18th Legislative District, which includes East Brunswick, Edison, Helmetta, Metuchen, South Plainfield, South River and Spotswood.
