Men’s Soccer Bows Out of NCAA Tournament

NEWARK – The United States Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point defeated the Kean University men’s soccer team, 2-0, Friday evening in the first-round of the NCAA Division III Tournament held at Lubetkin Field.

With the win USMMA will advance to face SUNY College at Brockport in second round action. The loss ends the Cougar season at 10-11-3.


Sophomore Cody Kessler scored the game-winner at 41:06 as he shot the ball into the upper right hand side of the net off a pass from senior Lane Gould in the box.

USMMA sealed the win with an insurance goal in the 64th minute as senior Dan Twito headed in the ball of a corner from Gould, his second assist of the night.

Rookie Tyler Callahan made two saves on the night.

Even in the loss the Cougars held a large 11-2 advantage in corner opportunities and 17-13 edge in shots. Despite a combined 30 shots on the evening, only eight were on goal.
