“…stale canvas…”

A few days ago, I walked by the Hotel Chelsea…

The Hotel Chelsea has seen the likes of Mark Twain, Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Dylan Thomas, Jack Kerouac, you name it…if a great piece of literature, or music, or screenplay, or art, has been developed in the last 20th century, it probably had its origins at the Chelsea…at least most of them anyway…

But this past year, I had promised myself (on my 50th birthday) that I was gonna get a room and stay overnight…didn’t quite turn out that way…

As life happens, plans sometimes don’t…perhaps one day…

But it is kinda surprising that I never stayed there, considering I lived in New York most of my life, and now still try to visit as often as possible…

Like a few days ago, when I passed by and took the photo above…and now, a few days later, the headlines read that the Chelsea is being sold…

Granted, for a lot of money, but…the Chelsea was never about the money, it was about the motives…any resident can tell you that…

And what exactly is going to happen to the residents once it gets sold is anybody’s guess…

Several years ago, I got to be a part of a church planting there in Chelsea, just one block away from this infamous landsite…

It took place in the back of a coffee shop, which got sold and became a gourmet sandwich cafe…which now, as of two days ago, has become a tile shop…

Is anybody going home anymore?….
