UNION – After capturing the ninth New Jersey Athletic Conference championship in program history, the Kean University men’s soccer team opens the NCAA Division III Men’s Soccer Tournament against United States Merchant Marine Academy on Friday, November 12.
Under 35th year head coach Tony Ochrimenko, the Cougars (10-10-3) are making the program’s 15th appearance in the NCAA tournament after facing arguably one of the nation’s toughest schedules, as they played nine of the 60 teams in the tournament field.
Kean, who appears in the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2001, battles the Landmark Conference champion Mariners (10-2-5) at Lubetkin Field at J. Malcolm Simon Stadium on the campus of New Jersey Institute of Technology.
In the other match-up, #21 New York University, the official host of the four-team region, battles The College at Brockport at 5 p.m., with the Cougars’ game against USMMA beginning 30 minutes following the conclusion of the NYU/Brockport game.
The Cougars had nearly half of its schedule against teams in the NCAA tournament, including conference games against William Paterson University, Richard Stockton College and Montclair State University. The Cougars also had a non-conference schedule that included Eastern Connecticut State University, Christopher Newport University, York College (Pa.), University of Rochester, New York University and Keene State College.
