South Amboy Race Shows Why Every Vote Matters

SOUTH AMBOY – After all the votes were counted – machine, absentee and provisional ballots – Democrat Fred Henry appears to be the winner of South Amboy’s mayoral race.

He won the race by one vote.

Independent challenger Mary O’Connor, who finished in second place, plans to file for a re-count.

When the voting machine tallies were counted Tuesday night, Henry led O’Connor 1075 votes to 1061. Independent candidates Vincent Mackiel and John Drogotta won 192 and 93 votes respectively.

Absentee ballots cut Henry’s margin to three votes over O’Connor, 1,123 to 1,120.

On Friday, election officials counted provisional ballots that were cast by voters whose names were not listed in the books at their polling place. That added five more votes for Henry and seven for O’Connor.

Henry will succeed Mayor John O’Leary, who decided not to run for re-election after 24 years in office.
