HIGHLAND PARK – Businesses in Highland Park will offer specials every Wednesday in November to gear up for the holiday shopping center.
Marlon Pando, owner of White Lotus Home, a natural and organic bedding store, started Green Wednesday last November, but it was the was Wednesday before Black Friday, the biggest shopping day of the year. He wanted to expand it this year to both businesses and the number of Wednesdays.
“My goal is to encourage more local shopping for green businesses. When we did this last year, we did it right before black Friday and we had a great response. They thought we were savvy. It got them to think locally and to think green before the holidays,” he said.
Though the Moongate, Over the Moon Toys, Inspire Me Fit, exercise and dance studio, and Zeina and Tete’s restaurants have joined White Lotus Home this year.
“Both of our stores have environmentally-friendly products, but that’s not what you think of when you think of a gift shop or toy store” said Jenni Chapman, owner of Through the Moongate and Over the Moon Toys. “Green Wednesday is a great concept because Highland Park is that kind of town. It sends a good message and it lets people know that they have more options than they think when they’re looking for green gifts.”
James McCrone, executive director of Main Street Highland Park, the non-profit that promotes the businesses along Raritan Avenue in the borough, said, “This is an innovative, fun way to get in the holiday spirit. Green Wednesday highlights the unique facets of Highland Park’s downtown: its focus on the local, the sustainable and the fairly traded. Green Wednesday gives people a way to start off on the right foot with their holiday shopping.”
Pando said he hopes Green Wednesday allows other businesses to offer specials leading up to Black Friday.
“We’re marketing this as “Highland Park goes green for the holidays,” he said.
