TRENTON – Looking to provide Garden State residents with another way to show their team pride, the Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) today began the sale of license plates that honor the area’s basketball teams – the New Jersey Nets, the Philadelphia 76ers and the New York Knicks.
“With another exciting season of hoops underway, it’s the perfect time to roll the plates out to our customers,” said MVC Chief Administrator Raymond P. Martinez. “I am confident these plates will be a huge hit with New Jersey motorists.”
The MVC is offering the three National Basketball Association (NBA) license plates through the mail with order forms available online at www.njmvc.gov/sports or at any one of the MVC’s 42 agencies. Plates are $60 for an initial purchase with an annual renewal fee of $60. Personalized plates are also available for purchase. Revenue generated from the sale of the plates will go to the state’s General Fund.
The NBA plates are the latest line of sports license plates available to New Jersey vehicle owners. On Oct. 20, the MVC unveiled its line of NASCAR-themed license plates. There are 10 driver plates to choose from, as well as a NASCAR fan plate and a Hall of Fame plate that honors the late Dale Earnhardt. In the coming weeks, the MVC will begin offering other sports license plates for fans of the NHL, MLB and the NFL.
“The sale of sports plates is a win-win for the state as it allows fans the unique opportunity to show their pride while providing another valuable source of revenue,” added Martinez.
The 76ers and Knicks are three- and two-time NBA champs, respectively, and the Nets are two-time American Basketball Association (ABA) champions.
