UNION – The Kean University women’s volleyball team closed out the 2010 season with a split in a tri-match with Baruch College and SUNY Institute of Technology on Saturday afternoon at Harwood Arena.
The Cougars (20-17) opened the tri-match with a 3-1 loss (25-22, 19-25, 25-23, 25-21) to SUNYIT (18-10), before earning a five-set win (25-20, 16-25, 25-21, 23-25, 15-11) over Baruch to close out the 2010 season with the program’s first 20-win season since 2002.
In the middle match of the afternoon, Baruch defeated SUNY IT (18-25, 25-23, 25-23, 25-23).
Against SUNYIT, junior Nicole Bolash finished with 15 kills and 19 digs, while senior setter Colleen Masterson added 35 assists, 12 digs and six kills. Junior libero Mary Aldana chipped in with 23 digs and junior Tara Richey had a total of three blocks.
In the win over Baruch, Bolash had 16 kills, 24 digs and three assisted blocks, while Richey finished with 13 kills and seven total blocks. Masterson dished out 32 assists and had 10 digs, while Aldana had a match-high 36 digs.
Richey finished the season with a pair of new school records, as she established the assisted blocks (63) and total blocks (108) marks. Her 45 solo blocks are the third highest total in single season history. Masterson also etched her name into the Kean record books, closing out her career with 859 assists this season for the fifth highest single season total.
