SOUTH AMBOY – John Dragotta is struggling to gain recognition as South Amboy residents select the first new mayor in 24 years.
Dragotta, 48, is a firefighter with the Morgan Hose and Chemical Co. No. 1 and a member of the city’s Board of Education. He plans to cut spending, share more services and expand the commercial and industrial tax base. Dragotta wants to create more recreation programs and promote better enforcement of code policies. He also wants to televise council meetings.
“All the towns around this area, they give back to the people,” Dragotta said. “This town doesn’t. These people don’t get anything for their tax dollars.”
The race is shaping up as a contest between Democrat Fred Henry and independent Vincent Mackiel. Dragotta is making inroads but his quest got off to a late start.
