I read the Constitution and understand it. I like progressive Democrats who stand for shared prosperity, opportunity, liberty, equality and justice. Mediocre Dems can be defeated in primaries but tea baggers are not able to solve problems because government is part of the solution — and they don’t get it.
They say TAXED ENOUGH ALREADY but the fact is, taxes are so unfair that people on the low end are overtaxed and wealthy people and corporations are undertaxed. The gap between rich and poor is growing because of the evils imposed by Ronald Reagan and his ilk. This helps explain why there are gaping deficits — not enough tax money coming in to meet the expenses going out.
I was told about a Democratic candidate for governor in Tennessee who is trying to appear more conservative than his GOP opponent. The Tennessee Democrat who wants to pretend he’s a Republican should have been stopped in the primary, but that’s no reason to make a worse mistake by electing an actual Republican.
It’s not every man for himself, as Republicans would have you believe. We are all in this together and we owe it to our children to make life better for everyone. The Republican health plan is don’t get sick, but if you do, die quick. I say Medicare works extremely well and every American should have a right to buy into it.
I do not want a big government controlling everything, but I sure as hell want a government big enough to control the powerful greedy corporations that are running much of the world. I want a government big enough to defend my democracy against communist China or religious zealots intent on doing us harm. I want a government big enough to provide basic assurances that I won’t be cheated or robbed, left to die of sickness that can be cured, unable to keep a roof over my head after a lifetime of work, poisoned by the air, food or water.
I want a government big enough to stop corporations that are too big to fail from dragging us all into a global economic Depression that risks a worldwide communist takeover by China or an inability to sustain our environment.
I want a government big enough to establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity. The Founding Fathers never contemplated nuclear weapons (or they would have left out the Second Amendment), air travel or the Internet but they were aware that such possibilities of progress were inevitable.
They did consider that freedom is a good thing as long as it can be regulated to prevent the powerful from running over the weaker members of society. They figured that everyone in society should be called upon to do some part to support the common good. And they also knew that their organizational plan required an ability to change and grow over time.
That’s why I — and all patriotic Americans — vote for Democrats.
