Robbed at Gunpoint

SOUTH AMBOY — Police are searching for two men who held up the Center Deli, located on North Stevens Avenue near Main Street last week.

Police Detective Richard Wojaczyk said one bandit cased the store before another came in with a handgun and leaped over the counter.

Store owner Rose Desai, 57, said she immediately sensed trouble when the second robber came in wearing a white hoodie.

“The look on his face, the way he talked, I knew something was going on,” said Desai. “He grabs me, and I saw the gun come out of his pocket, and he pushes me over to the register, and takes the money.”

The incident was captured on video by cameras mounted by the store owner’s son-in-law, Yogi Patel, after she was previously robbed at knife point back in June.

Cameras caught images of both suspects, one wearing a plaid jacket who checked the store interior moments before the gunman entered.

The second bandit held a gun to the owner’s head, as he cleaned out the cash register.

The thieves made off with about $482 in cash and were seen running up Stevens Avenue toward Main Street and driving off in an old, rust or burgundy-colored Honda.

Police have asked anyone with information on the robbery to call Detective David Keegan at 1-732-721-0111.
