CAPE MAY-Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s famous detective, Sherlock Holmes, and his partner Dr. Watson return to Cape May for a suspense-filled weekend during Sherlock Holmes Weekend, Friday, Nov. 5 through Sunday, Nov. 7, sponsored by the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities (MAC). The duo is faced with a baffling new mystery for 2010, “The Case of the Demons in a Padded Room,” by John K. Alvarez.

The game’s afoot on Friday, Nov. 5 at 8:30 p.m. Join your fellow “partners in crime” at the Inn of Cape May, 7 Ocean St., for an exciting evening. Holmes and Watson have raced back to the Berkshire Sanatorium, the place of their first encounter, to assist their friend Madame Samantha Rienhart. She is facing a dilemma which, if it comes to fruition, will have dire consequences for her hospital and quite possibly for England itself. The master detective and his stalwart companion face many challenges as they try to identify what is lurking within Room # 92, as well as within the heart of the criminal. A cash bar will be available. Registration will begin at 7 p.m. and doors open for seating at 8 p.m.

On Saturday, Nov. 6 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., gather the evidence you need to solve the crime during the self-guided Search for Clues Tour. Visit a selection of Cape May’s Victorian properties in search of clues. Uncover the clues and complete the answer sheet for your chance to be the grand prize winner. The Search for Clues Tour is part of the full event package or may be purchased separately for $15 per person. Anyone completing an answer sheet is eligible to win the grand prize and you need not be present.

Continue working your way through the mystery on Saturday, Nov. 6 from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Inn of Cape May. Why is Holmes drawn to this case? Is it his friendship with Madame Reinhart or the secrets he has uncovered during his search? Why was this terrible crime committed? What are the larger ramifications? Compare your findings to those of Sherlock Holmes. Have you matched wits with the master detective or are you on track to become this year’s clueless wonder?

On Sunday, Nov. 7 at 12:30 p.m. at the Inn of Cape May, Holmes unlocks the mystery! Enjoy a hearty lunch as Holmes and Watson reveal the solution to this year’s mystery. Is the villain among us? How well did you fare in your search? Once the mystery is solved, the winners will be announced and prizes awarded in various categories.

The East Lynne Theater Company’s “Sherlock Holmes’ Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle” on Friday, Nov. 5 and Saturday, Nov. 6 at 8 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, Decatur and Hughes streets, is an optional activity that weekend. Step back in time, as East Lynne Theater Company presents this tale in the style of a vintage radio broadcast; complete with live sound effects and commercials, just like Sherlock Holmes’ radio series on NBC that premiered on Oct. 20, 1930. Holmes and Watson try to discover how a precious blue stone came to be in a goose on Christmas Eve. General admission $23, Full-time students $13, ages 18 and under are free!

Full weekend packages are available for Sherlock Holmes Weekend at $180 per couple or $95 per person (packages do not include accommodations or optional events). The Search for Clues Tour is part of the full package or can be purchased separately for $15 per person.
