NEXUS NJ follows in the footsteps of “Celebrating Excellence”, a juried exhibit presented at Arts Guild New Jersey from 1999-2008, which featured artists from Union County, NJ.  For NEXUS NJ, the scope of the exhibit has been expanded to provide an opportunity to all artists who either live or work in New Jersey.  Overall, artists from 11 of New Jersey’s 21 counties were selected to participate in the 2010 show.

The juror for the 2010 installation of NEXUS NJ is Sharon Matt-Atkins, associate curator of exhibitions at the Brooklyn Museum. The role of the juror is to act as a judge – to review the submitted artwork and select the work to be included. This year, 47 pieces were chosen from more than 210 submissions.  Works include photography, drawing, painting, sculpture, fiber, and mixed media, in a range of materials and styles.  Many featured works are for sale.

Art exhibits at Arts Guild New Jersey focus primarily on the works of talented artists from New Jersey. According to AGNJ executive director, Lawrence Cappiello, “Too many people seem to think that great art in the Eastern U.S. only can be found in our neighbor to the north—New York City, where, granted, many of the notable contemporary artists are represented by some of the best galleries in the country, if not the world.”

However, Cappiello believes that without exception, the talent of New Jersey artists rivals that of artists found anywhere else in the world.  He explains, “During the course of each year, in order to organize the art exhibits we present, it is necessary to review a LOT of art by a LOT of people, and we have found, without exception that the art created by New Jersey artists can be every bit as innovative, technically excellent and insightful as artwork found anywhere else—including New York City. During our past season (2009-2010) we featured dynamic artworks by no fewer than 100 artists and nearly 70% of those artists were from this state.”

Gallery hours are Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, 1 – 4 p.m. The exhibit can also be viewed during regular office hours, Monday – Thursday, by appointment. Call 1-732-381-7511 for more information.
