Atanasio Picks Up Liberty League Award

GENEVA, N.Y. — William Smith College first-year Morgan Atanasio (Arthur L. Johnson/Clark) was named the Liberty League Field Hockey Co-Rookie of the Week by the conference office on Monday. This is the second time she has earned the honor.

Atanasio helped limit the Herons’ opposition to just two goals on 26 shots last week. The 16th-ranked Herons went 1-1, topping Rochester 3-1 on Wednesday before falling to No. 3 Messiah 1-0 on Saturday. Atanasio recorded her second defensive save of the season in the first half against the Falcons, helping William Smith keep the visitors off the scoreboard in the opening 35 minutes. Messiah came into the match averaging 3.0 goals per game.

Atanasio has started all 10 games she has played in for the Herons. She’s recorded both of William Smith’s defensive saves this season. Through 11 games, the Herons have outscored their opponents 39-16, including three shutouts.

William Smith is 9-2 overall, 2-1 in the Liberty League. The Herons will host a pair of conference matches this weekend. Hamilton (6-1, 3-0) will visit McCooey Field at 4 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 8, while St. Lawrence (4-4, 2-1) will return to Geneva at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 9.
